âI came to see for myself,â she said.
âI beg your pardon?â
âTo see for myself. About the estate. You remember?â She looked at him. âYou must remember. We talked about it. You gave me advice. In the park.â
âAbout your family estate? Yes. I remember. But ââ
âThis is it.â
âYabloki Sad?â
âYes. It belonged to us once. The village and much else beside. All the land round here. Then we had to hand it over to the peasants, under the Tsarâs reforms. And now, as I told you, Marputin wants to buy it back. And give it to me.â
The village?â
âYes. It was as you said. Ownership was vested in the community as a whole, which makes it much more difficult than if you were dealing with separate individuals. The whole Mir has to agree.â
âThatâll take some doing!â said Dmitri feelingly.
âYou think so? Marputin doesnât. He says things have changed. He thinks they could be willing to sell. But,â said Ludmilla passionately. âI donât want them to sell. I want things to stay as they are.â
âDo you know why things have changed?â asked Dmitri. âWhy they might be willing to sell?â
âNo?â
âBecause theyâre starving, thatâs why.â
Ludmilla stood for a moment, stunned.
âI donât believe it! He couldnât be so ââ
âThereâs famine all round here. Ordinary people are desperate.â
âAnd thatâs why they would be willing to sell?â she whispered. âSo that they could buy food?â
âThatâs right.â
âI came up here,â she said, âto tell them â ask them â beg them not to sell! And now youâre saying â?â
âIâm not sure I really am saying that.â
âWhat else can you be saying?â she demanded.
âI donât know. I really donât know.â
âItâs so awful,â she said, her voice trembling. âWhichever way. If they donât sell, they starve. If they do sell, I ââ
She sat there for some time frowning in concentration.
Then, suddenly, she looked up.
âDmitri Alexandrovich,â she said, âwhat are you doing here?â
It was a question he found difficult to answer.
âIâve been bringing some things over,â he prevaricated. âA few parcels that friends at Kursk made up.â
âFood?â
âNo. It would have been better if it had been.â
âWhy donât I go into Tula tomorrow and get some?â
âIt would cost money.â
âIâve got money.â
âNot enough. You canât feed the whole village.â
âNo?â said Ludmilla.
To his surprise, in the monastery yard next morning he saw Bibitkin.
âItâs my mother-in-law,â said the disgraced priest shamefacedly. âShe lives in Tula. The Blagochini says Iâve got to make my peace with her. Otherwise he wonât be able to do anything for me.â
âWhat about that icon you sold?â
âThe manâs given it back.â
âGiven it back?â
âYes, he came into the church one morning and said that, on reflection, he had decided that he ought not to go ahead with the deal. Mindful of my suffering.â
âOh, yes?â
âYes. He said it had been no part of his intentions to bring calamity down upon the head of a poor, hard-working priest whose virtue was known to all the neighbourhood.â
âOh, yes?â
âAnd so he was returning the icon.â
âHe actually returned it?â
âCertainly.â
Dmitri could hear the edifice of his case cracking.
âIt was the same man?â
âYes.
